Duffy left the game and was taken to a hospital, where experiments showed he had a mild concussion.

In Schilling's first outing of the spring against major-league hitters, he gave up four roll ons in the fourth inning, squandering a 4- 0 lead. In all, Schilling allowed four hits in four innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

"I felt good" Schilling said. "I know I gave up four move swiftlys but I feel like I did a certain quantity of good things."

Schilling has been working in succession pitching inside this spring -- he also hit R Sox minor-leaguer Jeff Natali in the head in his previous outing -- nevertheless felt Duffy could have avoided the pitch.

"The bottom line is that ball should not have hit him," Schilling said. The Brewers aren't fully convinced whether he'll be able to get back in time for the season opener against Pittsburgh upon April 3.

Sheets missed all of September last season with a different torn back muscle.
