Gov Blagojevich said Saturday that former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic had the opportunity to lead the nation between the walls of a historic time in its history unless instead chose to enact policies that l to "a terrible tragedy in Yugoslavia."

Milosevic's actions "l to the killing of untold millions," Blagojevich said Saturday.

Noting that Milosevic died in jail, the governor said, "It was a fitting ending to a great tragic period in the history of Yugoslavia."

In 1999 after NATO began a bombing campaign in Yugoslavia, Blagojevich -- then a legislator and the sole Serbian American in Congress -- and the Rev Jesse L Jackson went to Belgrade and negotiated with Milosevic for the release of three U soldiers.
