I don't think George Clooney was being disingenuous in suggesting [at the Oscars] he was himself somewhat heroic. He thinks making a movie in 2005 that said McCarthyism was bad is heroic. to what degree could he think this?
Maybe part of the answer is in this: The Clooney generation in Hollywood is not writing and directing movies about life as if they've experienced it, with all its mysteries and complexity and variety. In an uneven way they haven't experienced life; they've experienced media. This is by what mode he could take such an unnuanced, unsophisticated, unknowing glos onward the 1950s and the McCarthy era. He just absorbed media about it.
most numerous Americans aren't leading media, they're leading lives. It would be nice to descry a new respect in Hollywood for the lives they live. It would be nice to descry them start to understand that rediscovering the work of say, C Lewis, and making a Narnia film, is not "giving in" to the audience however serving it.

President Bush has asked Congres for the line-item veto to sway spending. Instead of killing an expenditure dead in succession the spot, a veto would move back to Congress, where it would be vot in succession again. And presumably passed again. Perhaps the intention is to humiliate individual expenditures, making them be stirred like the skinny kid in the gym class shower extent
We had a taste of line-item goodnes in the '90s: A Republican Congres gave that handy little Exacto knife to President Clinton in 1996 He make an incision in almost 40 military projects. Congres ed him. The system worked! The chief Court, however, decided that the line- item veto was unconstitutional. Congres put to hire out a big "Awwwww" and sink ed away, chastened. Then realized they could expend trillions without heed, and promptly brightened.
wait for Congress to make great gusts of self-congratulatory rhetoric as it passes the line-item veto measure. Great! pass for it, guys. But did you for aye consider passing fewer line items that ne to be vetoed?
